Morphological characteristics: The spathe has a wingspan of 14-20mm. 1/2 of the forewings are pale (off-white) while the rest (almost 2/3) are rust-coloured. The hind wings and abdomen are light in colour while the head and thorax are brownish red. The larva, fully developed, is 8-12mm long and usually whitish yellow in colour. Biological cycle: may complete 4-8 overlapping generations per year. It disperses as a larvae in a bomb (diapause). In the spring it pupates and the larvae gradually emerge and lay up to 400 eggs, usually in clusters, on the produce. The larvae weave webs and contaminate food with their droppings.
Infestation: It is a polyphagous insect. It feeds on various kinds of seeds and their products, nuts and hoofbeats, dried plant and animal substances, zoological collections, milk powder, chocolate, pollen in beehives, etc.
